And the plot thickens in the Miss Puerto Rico pepper-spray incident.

Authorities investigating allegations that Miss Puerto Rico Universe Ingrid Marie Rivera’s dress and makeup were sabotaged with pepper spray during a Nov. 24 pageant in San Juan found no traces of the substance in her belongings, Reuters reports.

“I guess she has a lot of explaining to do,” police spokesman Stephen Alvarez said after investigations by Puerto Rico’s Forensic Sciences Institute turned up no capsicum, the prime ingredient in pepper spray.

In light of the findings, police superintendent Pedro Toledo told reporters the investigation will now focus on whether anybody provided false statements to police officers – a felony. (Rivera herself has not provided any statements or information to the police; the initial police complaint was filed by the pageant’s security director, Reuters reports.)

However, Rivera continues to maintain that her alleged assault did occur, though she says it will only make her stronger as she competes in the Miss Universe pageant in Vietnam next July.

“Where you got a will, there’s a way,” she said in a recent Today show interview. “With God in my mind always, like I block myself through anything negative that could pass through my mind.”
